The National Culture and Arts Foundation was founded in 1996 with the stated aim of creating a healthier environment in Taiwan for the development of culture and the arts. The NCAF also presents awards as part of its mission to seek to raise the bar for culture and the arts. The organization assists with the holding of art / cultural events, sponsors the work of arts / cultural organizations, awards grants to art / culture workers, and carries out the provisions of the Culture and Arts Reward Act.

Established in 1983 in response to a burgeoning modern art movement, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) is Taiwan’s first public art museum. Since its inception, the museum has shouldered its mission dedicated to the preservation, research, development and promotion of contemporary art in Taiwan. In addition to stewarding the near-century of Taiwan’s art history, the museum has continued to be attentive to the development of contemporary art.

Established on the century-old campus of the National Taipei University of Education, the Museum of National Taipei University of Education (MoNTUE) is located where the tranquility of a college campus meets the urban bustle. Ceiling window panes cover the side of the building facing the city street; the museum’s openness inspires an artistic dialogue between the school and the city. Since its inception in 2011, the museum has collaborated with several major international arts institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris and the Tokyo University of the Arts Museum.

The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (KMFA) is located in the Neiweipi Cultural Park, the north-western corner of Kaohsiung city. Facing the diverse development of contemporary art and the changes brought on by the mode of cultural tourism, the museum is undergoing a transformative re-positioning and re-organisation. Since its opening in 1994, the KMFA has incorporated creative elements of contemporary art, architecture, design and community development to expand the public’s horizon.

The building of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Taipei was completed and inaugurated in 1921. Originally, the building was “Kensei Shogakko” (Jian Cheng Elementary School), for educating Japanese children during the Japanese-ruled period. Apart from playing an important role in organising international contemporary art exhibitions and focalising the fruitful results of Taiwanese contemporary art, the museum has long pursued three goals: promoting diverse artistic creation and exhibitions, inspiring new public perspectives, and providing creativity and vitality for the development of contemporary cities.

Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts (KdMoFA) is situated within the campus of Taipei National University of the Arts. It is the very first professional museum operated by a university of arts in Taiwan. Through curating expertise, the Kuandu Residency Program, academic research, professional pedagogy and mutual inspiration of creativity, KdMoFA is expected to be an inter-disciplinary realm of art, full of space and young energy, providing extraordinary interpretation of exhibitions.

Hong-Gah Museum was founded in 1999. With exhibitions, campaigns, inter-disciplinary performances and so forth, the Museum provides an art appreciation venue of quality as well as sowing seeds of art for the local community. Hong-Gah Museum has long devoted itself to educational courses and lectures to promote aesthetic education in the community. On top of that, it serves as a platform for the showcase of contemporary art via regular themed events such as the biennale “Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition” and other solo / group exhibitions.

Since the turn of the 21st century, expeditious globalisation has brought about tremendous international political, economic, technological and cultural changes. As an island, Taiwan has experienced various extreme situations among those dynamics. In response, the Graduate Institute of Interdisciplinary Art was founded by Professor Lu Ming-Te in 2006. As the first cross-disciplinary research institute in Taiwan, its three main developmental objectives are interdisciplinary practice, cultural action, and critical research.

The Graduate Institute of Trans-disciplinary Arts emphasises cross-disciplinary dialogue and knowledge. Its curriculum is based on the ideas of “cross-disciplinary creativity” and “cultural production and exhibition curating,” for the development and integration of various projects and research. It is enabled by professional knowledge and theoretical thinking in art creation, giving emphasis to developing a critical mind that caters to the contemporary needs for cross-disciplinary arts talents.

Launched in 2016 at the National Taipei University of Education, the MA in Critical and Curatorial Studies of Contemporary Art (CCSCA) is an international graduate program that aims to provide students with a critical understanding of the diverse issues, contexts and practices of contemporary art and curating, with a focus on Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific. Given Taiwan’s central geographical location and growing importance as a vibrant and diverse cultural hub in Asia, CCSCA is well placed to develop a critical understanding of art and curatorial practices in East and Southeast Asia, as well as the Pacific.

TheCube Project Space is an independent art space devoted to the research, production and presentation of contemporary art. Located in a 50-year old apartment building on a bustling alley next to a traditional market in south Taipei, TheCube has held its programs since opening in April 2010, including curatorial art projects, individual and collective works, public forums, screenings and publications.
