Alexander LAU (Hong Kong/New York), Freya CHOU (Hong Kong/Taiwan)
Focus on the intimate personal bond which evolves between a curator/gallerist and the artist, especially in the format of a solo exhibition, both Chou and Lau will take case studies based on their experience of working in different settings as departure point, and look into how this direct relationship to artworks have been overshadowed by the reduction of exhibitions to ideas which are largely communicated in the art world’s current lingua franca. And if there’s conflict of working paradigm within the different capitalist structure — market oriented v.s.non-profit institution? We would also like to explore the scope of curatorial work that has been ignored in the current definition of professionalism in curating, and ask to what extend can curatorial discourse continue to maintain a distance, or not necessary, from the solo show which serves as a catalyzing moment for artistic production; and could solo exhibition functions as archive of writing contemporary art history?
