Since 21 century, the expeditious globalizations have brought about such tremendous international political, economic, technological and cultural changes. As an island, Taiwan has experienced various extreme situations among those dynamics. In response to these changes, the Graduate Institute of Interdisciplinary Art was founded by Professor Lu Ming-Te in 2006. As the first cross-disciplinary research institute in Taiwan, the three main developmental objectives are designed as follows: 1. the process, experience and aesthetics of Interdisciplinary Art Practice, 2. the competence and spirit of Cultural Activism, and 3. the knowledge and speculation for the Critical Research. All these are for the pursuits of a better way of peaceful coexistence between human and nature, and the mutual dialogues among diverse communities. Under the above three objectives, the four main fields of study we have developed are: “culture, curating and social practice”, “environment and activism”, “educational art” and “trans-medias art practice”. The students of the Institute come from a variety of professions and work domains. During their study, they are encouraged to target the issues of their concerns, bridge the gaps between their professions and other interested fields, and learn how to let art appear by way of communication and coordination.

The Graduate Institute of Trans-disciplinary Arts emphasizes cross-disciplinary dialogue and knowledge. Its curriculum is based on the ideas of “cross-disciplinary creativity” and “cultural production and exhibition curating ” for the development and integration of various projects and research. It is enabled by professional knowledgeand theoretical thinking in art creation, giving emphasis to developing a critical mindthat caters to the contemporary needs for cross-disciplinary arts talents.
